Fish count at Ashtamudi reveals change in species composition
Decline in species diversity, increasing presence of marine fish, and dip in commercially important varieties such as pearl sport (karimeen) and mud crab (kayal njandu) — Ashtamudi Fish Count (AFC) 2022 reveals stark variations in the ichthyofauna of the waterbody, a designated Ramsar site.The first fish census was jointly organised by the Department of Fisheries, ATREE, and the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala, carried out by researchers and experts with the help of fishers.

₹100-crore ‘eco budget’, blue plastic management scheme on the cards
As climate change and conservation are firmly in focus the world over, the Karnataka Government has announced an “eco budget” of ₹ 100 crore to “compensate the negative effect created on the forest system due to natural and human interventions over past five years”. However, recent reports show that the amount of forest land diverted in Karnataka for non-forestry purposes since 2016-21 is about 1,355 hectares.
