Into the grasslands of India

Indian grasslands take many forms. From the green sholas of the Western Ghats to the woodland savannas of southern and central India, from the fringes of the flat Rann of Kacchhh to high altitude grasslands atop mountains. They are home to a wide variety of creatures, sustain livestock, and form a complex landscape used by people and wildlife. They are also increasingly threatened by invasive shrubs, plantations, agricultural expansion, land grab for large scale renewable energy projects, conversion to industrial areas, infrastructure development and urban expansion. Grasslands, a landscape that needs our immediate attention, have become a major focus of ATREE’s research.
