Deliverable 3(d): Policy support tools and methodologies regarding the diverse conceptualization of values of biodiversity and nature’s benefits to people including ecosystem services
At its second session held in Antalya, Turkey, from 9 to 14 December 2013, the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), approved the initiation of scoping for a methodological assessment on the conceptualization of values of biodiversity and nature’s benefits to people and the development of a preliminary guide, for consideration by the Plenary at its third session.
At its third session, in its decision IPBES-3/1 on the work programme for the period 2014‒2018 (sect. V, para. 3), the Plenary requested the expert group established for scoping the methodological assessment and developing a preliminary guide, to revise the scoping report for the methodological assessment set out in document IPBES/3/8, based on comments received following an open review by Governments and stakeholders, for consideration by the Plenary at its fourth session.
In section V of decision IPBES-4/1, the Plenary welcomed the preliminary guide on the conceptualization of values of biodiversity and nature’s benefits to people (contained in document IPBES/4/INF/13) and approved the scoping report on the methodological assessment regarding diverse conceptualization of values of nature and its benefits, including biodiversity and ecosystem services as set out in annex VI to decision IPBES-4/1.
In the same decision, the Plenary requested the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel to nominate a set of experts to ensure, in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel, that values and valuation were incorporated appropriately into all IPBES deliverables.
In section VI of decision IPBES-5/1, the Plenary welcomed the progress made and next steps planned in the work of the expert group, extended its mandate until the seventh session of the Plenary and requested progress reports to be made available to the Plenary at its sixth and seventh sessions.
In decision IPBES-6/1 (sections V and VI) the Plenary approved the undertaking of a methodological assessment regarding the diverse conceptualization of multiple values of nature and its benefits, including biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services for consideration by the Plenary at its ninth session.
