Science-wise: The Forests Are Burning, And We May Not Be Doing Enough to Protect Them

Preventing major forest fires requires removing the fuel and the catalyst that trigger it. This explains why the seasonal clearance of leaf litter through controlled burning is critical. But over the years, the practice has come under criticism from biodiversity experts, due to its impact on flora and fauna and the growth of new species. “It was believed that this would do a good job in saving biodiversity. So, we started controlling forest fires everywhere. Unfortunately, this led to the accumulation of a lot of biomass in the forest, and caused big canopy fires that are more challenging to douse.” says Dr Siddappa Setty. The major problem lies in our strategy around litter fires — somewhere between our transition from traditional ways of controlled fires, to putting a blanket ban on them.

All about orchids in new book

The newly released inventory of India’s orchids, ‘A Checklist of the Orchidaceae of India,’ was published by the Missouri Botanical Garden was coauthored by ATREE's Kailash BR. The comprehensive book on the orchids provides detailed taxonomic status and distribution of 1234 species of one of the largest groups of beautiful flowering plants. Evolutionarily and ecologically, orchids are a fascinating plant group due to their unique and diverse habitats ranging from dark wet forest understory to forest canopy as epiphytes. Orchids’ mutualistic association with fungal partners could be one of the major reasons they thrive in diverse habitats.

New genus of wasp named after environmental think tank

An entire new genus of parasitoid wasp is dedicated to ATREE. With the discovery of a new species of wasp, by Ranjith AP and Priyadarsanan Dharma Rajan, Atree rajathae and two other already known species, a new genus of Braconid wasp was named ‘Atree’ . “Little things that run the world are facing the worst of this crisis."- EO Wilson. All creatures, big and small, are important components of nature and play critical roles in the functioning of the ecosystems that are declining all over the world.

Twin lives of the Gambusia fish: a protector against disease or a pest?

"Mosquitofish or Gambusia are being released into waterbodies by several local district Uttar Pradesh district administrations.
Their introduction into local water bodies may actually be harmful to the ecosystem in the long run as Gambusia may become more virulent and adaptable, and pose a larger threat to biodiversity and local livelihoods. Employing biological control measures, in the form of a natural predator to control the spread of a pest species, is not uncommon. Mosquitofish are difficult to eliminate once established. “It is really difficult to manage the species because female Gambusia can get impregnated and lay fries whenever the situation is favourable. It has also been reported that Gambusia can delay or prepone their sexual maturation and alter their body size based on the environment,” says Nobin RajaMosquitofish or Gambusia are being released into waterbodies by several local district Uttar Pradesh district administrations.

Why Feeding Monkeys is Bad for Forests

Called ‘provisioning’, the act of feeding animals either directly (feeding stray dogs) or indirectly (animals feeding on agricultural produce) develops more complex relationships between humans and animals, one that is not all positive. Animals like monkeys can develop a dependence on what is an easy source of food, creating havoc when it isn’t provided— as in the case with covid lockdowns. This increased proximity also increases the risk of zoonotic diseases. What are the implications of this generosity? Can it be done in a structured way? What are the benefits of feeding our non-human neighbours?
