Conflict between renewable energy and biodiversity protection

The study analyses conflicts between renewable energy projects and biodiversity protection. Cases of wind energy projects in Maharashtra and mini-hydro projects in Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka show that the same conflict is manifested either as an environment versus environment or as an environment versus development conflict, contingent upon the scale of analysis and how the political process prioritises different interests. This research highlights the social and political consequences of renewable energy development and the potential trade-offs between biodiversity, livelihoods and renewable energy.
